Chess Online

Lately I have spent most of my chess playing time on line at the above sites. I like the ICC site the best because of the neat videos.

If I was a young person starting out playing chess I would of course be an online player. Chess online is the most convenient way to play but it does lack the social appeal of over the board at a chess club.

For the little guy wanting to know the rules of the game and the fine strategic points,
which of course he will need to know before going online to play, I recommend

Chess For Kids

I have a young nephew that I want to teach to play chess.

There are many benefits to learning how to play chess:
1) Improved logic and math skills.

2) Improved visualization skills.

3) Improved planning skills.

4) Improved learniing skills.

Given all the benefits of  playing chess it only remained for me to figure out how
best to teach the little guy. Well the answer is a no brainer. Most little people love well illustrated colour books with a great story and funny memorable characters.

I found a great book that teaches chess to kids. "Chess For Kids" by Kelvin Smith and Daniel McDonald is an award winning, beautifully illustrated and highly entertaining chess manual for kids who are just getting into the game. The book is in the form of a manual about the Royal Game.

The rules and goals of the game, complete with the strategic elements of the game and the power of the various pieces told in funny and beautifully illustrated fairy tale setting. Throughout the book are little test question to apply the newly learn lessons.
